What is design thinking and what is it for?

Once the needs have been identified, common criteria are identified among them, in order to recognize aspects that are not identifiable at first sight. This moment is known as “insight” or the deepest emerging sense of what we have been able to rescue as needs.

The process of feedback from others or testing with users allows us to fine-tune the solution of the idea by incorporating the voice of other stakeholders. This fine-tuning also allows us to see whether or not our idea has solved the identified problem and thus be able to improve it. There is not only one version of the idea. The solution can live a process of continuous improvement, known as a product always in Beta.

Design thinking in education

Nowadays everyone knows Airbnb, the reference website when it comes to looking for accommodation all over the world. But this has not always been the case. In 2009 its revenue barely reached 900 dollars a month.

Thus was born Barely Opera, an event that has managed to give a new air to the opera production of the Californian city. Barely Opera is presented as an alternative to traditional opera, more economical and affordable both for the SFO itself and for the users (many of them young people or students).

Another example of successful Design Thinking can be found at SAP. The ERP and management software company has used Design Thinking to improve its products internally. The software needed to be adapted to make it simpler and more manageable. And, above all, to respond to the real needs of users in their daily lives.

Thanks to the use of the Design Thinking methodology, this has been possible. This has allowed SAP products to be better adapted to the specific needs of its customers. The user experience has been improved by taking into account the opinions of the customers themselves, the interface has been optimized and, as a whole, a more efficient and agile experience has been obtained in every sense.

Design thinking examples

Applied to education, it favors the development of problem-solving skills through creative group work. Students “learn by doing” and feel that they are doing their bit. They become the protagonists of their own learning, experimenting with tools and processes that combine moments of divergence, convergence and synthesis.

To do this, we will have to form a team, prepare the research and gather inspiration by immersing ourselves in the context of the problem, observing with curiosity and obtaining information from experts and users.

It is necessary to order and condense the information obtained to make sense of it and transform it into meaningful knowledge that will allow us to find the major issues, define perspectives and generate ideas.
